"Just put one foot in front of the other."
Dana Beyeler

It's a phrase so deeply seated I can barely remember Mom saying it 50 years ago. Now at 56 it's amazing what I recall during long training runs. Since 1998, I've transitioned from "I'd like to run a marathon" to "where's the next 100 miler." Logging 16 marathons, a couple of 50 milers and this summer the Mohican 100 Mile Trail Run is quite a ride.

God provides me with the ability, the US Marine Corps taught me I can successfully push far beyond perceived mental and physical limits, I'm inspired by my nephew George who as a special needs athlete knows no barriers and encouraged by my entire family. My Dad (80) is my crew on normal Saturday long runs of 28+ miles. It's a wonderful time together, we talk, and he encourages and keeps traffic off my back. I love that man. My wife and rest of recruited family is my crew on the 50 and 100 miles making them family events.

My most FAQ: WHY? Does there have to be a WHY? God gives me the ability and I can. I enjoy overcoming the barriers (make pain your friend) so I'm compelled to squeeze 100% of what I have inside me out each day.

To get beyond marathon distance was difficult. For a long time, I was stuck training at 51 miles per week max. Any more and injuries set in. I've been using ProSport MAX, Antarcti-Krill, On-Guard, InSight Natural and PowerThru daily and add Active-Whey for my long weekend runs since early 2006. With the right mindset and the Advantig products, I've transitioned to about 60 miles per week without injuries. My weekend long runs are about 28+ miles (because I like it) and I look for new barriers to knock down. This year my schedule is 3 marathons, a 50 miler and a 100 miler. I'm a believer.

The people in the ultra community are unique; dedicated to helping each other complete each journey. I'm a rookie at this. There are hundreds of ultra runners and crews who no one ever hears of or reads about, but they are the most humble and helpful folks imaginable. It's like a family everywhere you go. I've also been fortunate to be associated with Reston Runners in Virginia. They're an ongoing source of inspiration and assistance.

Everytime I run, I consider "this could be my last time," so I try to enjoy each time out. Who knows how long we each have. Maybe the answer to WHY rests in the thought I have toward my sons and grandchildren (3 boys so far). I would like them to consider someday about Dad/Pop in whatever they attempt: If he could...I can....
